August 2022 Children’s Eye Health & Safety Month

August 2022 Children’s Eye Health & Safety Month

Is Too Much Screen Time Harming Children’s Vision?

Acuity Eye Center Lahore Pakistan and the American Academy of Ophthalmology help parents separate facts from fiction.

As children spend more time tethered to screens, there is increasing concern about potential harm to their visual development. Ophthalmologists – physicians who specialize in medical and surgical eye care – are seeing a marked increase in children with dry eye and eye strain from too much screen time. But does digital eyestrain cause lasting damage? Should your child use reading glasses or computer glasses? As you send your kids back to school this month for more time with screens and books, Acuity Eye Center Lahore Pakistan and the American Academy of Ophthalmology are arming parents with the facts, so they can make informed choices about their children’s eye health.

It’s a fact that there is a worldwide epidemic of myopia, also known as nearsightedness. Since 1971, the incidence of nearsightedness in the US nearly doubled, to 42 percent. In Asia, up to 90 percent of teenagers and adults are nearsighted. Clearly, something is going on. But scientists can’t agree on exactly what.

A new study appearing in Ophthalmology, the journal of the American Academy of Ophthalmology, offers further evidence that at least part of the worldwide increase in nearsightedness has to do with near work activities; not just screens but also traditional books. And, that spending time outdoors—especially in early childhood—can slow the progression of nearsightedness. It remains unclear whether the rise in nearsightedness is due to focusing on phones all the time, to light interacting with our circadian rhythms to influence eye growth or none of the above.

Digital Strain

Digital Strain

While scientists look for a definitive answer, there is no doubt that most computer users experience digital eyestrain. Kids are no different from adults when it comes to digital eyestrain. They can experience dry eye, eye strain, headaches, and blurry vision, too. While symptoms are typically temporary, they may be frequent and persistent.

But this doesn’t mean they need a prescription for computer glasses or that they have developed an eye condition of middle-age that requires reading glasses, as some suggest. It also doesn’t mean that blue light coming from computer screens is damaging their eyes. It means they need to take more frequent breaks. This is because we don’t blink as often while using computers and other digital devices. Extended reading, writing, or other intensive work can also cause eye strain. Ophthalmologists recommend taking a 20-second break from near work every 20 minutes.

Here are 10 tips to help protect your child’s eyes from computer eyestrain

Here are 10 tips to help protect your child’s eyes from computer eyestrain:

  • Set a kitchen timer or a smart device timer to remind them.
  • Alternate reading an e-book with a real book and encourage kids to look up and out the window every two chapters
20-20-20 Rule
  • After completing a level in a video game, look out the window for 20 seconds.
  • Pre-mark books with a paperclip every few chapters to remind your child to look up. On an e-book, use the “bookmark” function for the same effect.
  • Avoid using a computer outside or in brightly lit areas, as the glare on the screen can create strain.
  • Adjust the brightness and contrast of your computer screen so that it feels comfortable for you.
  • Use good posture when using a computer and when reading.
Encourage your child to hold digital media farther away, 18 to 24 inches is ideal.
  • Encourage your child to hold digital media farther away, 18 to 24 inches is ideal.
  • Create a distraction that causes your child to look up every now and then.
  • Remind them to blink when watching a screen.

“I prefer to teach kids better habits, instead of supplying them a crutch like reading glasses to enable them to consume even more media,” said K. David Epley, M.D., clinical spokesperson for the American Academy of Ophthalmology. “If you run too far and your legs start hurting, you stop. Likewise, if you’ve been reading too long or watching videos too long, and your eyes start hurting, you should stop.”

Here is the message from our lead consultant Professor Dr. Zia Ul Mazhry,

"Your child’s vision is critical and even more critical is protecting it during everyday activities. Eye injuries occur most commonly during outdoor sports or athletics. The parents and guardians need to pay close attention as a caregiver. If the kids are left alone, will often opt to not wear protective eyewear when playing sports, let alone a helmet, due to a number of reasons. Therefore, it’s up to you to ensure your child’s eyes and vision are kept safe."

April 2021-Sports Eye Safety Awareness Month

April 2021-Sports Eye Safety Awareness Month

Ophthalmologists Urge Eye Protection for Recreational and Professional Sports

New research shows that about 30,000 people in the U.S. go to emergency departments each year with sports-related eye injuries, a substantially higher estimate than previously reported. This April during Sports Eye Safety Month, Acuity Eye Center Lahore Pakistan and the American Academy of Ophthalmology remind the public that the right protective eyewear is the best defence against eye injury.

Three sports accounted for almost half of all trips to the emergency room: basketball, baseball, and air/paintball guns. Sports-related injuries can range from corneal abrasions and bruises on the lids to more serious, vision-threatening internal injuries, such as retinal detachment and internal bleeding.

Ophthalmologists — physicians who specialize in medical and surgical eye care — continue to remind the public that most sports-related eye injuries are avoidable.

Here are some tips for both the professional athlete and the Little League star to stay safe:

Wear the right eye protection

Wear the right eye protection

For basketball, racquet sports, soccer and field hockey, wear protection with shatterproof polycarbonate lenses.

Put your helmet on

Put your helmet on

For baseball, ice hockey and lacrosse, wear a helmet with a polycarbonate face mask or wire shield.

Know the standards

Choose eye protection that meets the American Society of Testing and Materials (ASTM) standards. See the Academy’s protective eyewear article for more details.

Throw out old gear

Eye protection should be replaced when damaged or yellowed with age. Wear and tear may cause them to become weak and lose effectiveness.

Glasses won’t cut it

Glasses won’t cut it

Regular prescription glasses may shatter when hit by flying objects. If you wear glasses, try sports goggles on top to protect your eyes and your frames.

“I’ve treated many patients with eye trauma because of an unintentional blow to the face,” said Rahul N. Khurana, M.D., clinical spokesperson for the American Academy of Ophthalmology. “Athletes often engage in these seemingly safe, yet rugged, high-impact sports with zero awareness about the potential risk factors. This is why eye protection is critical and can greatly reduce the number of emergency room visits treated each year.”

Here is the message from our lead consultant Professor Dr Zia Ul Mazhry,

" Protection of your eyes from eye injury is your own hands mostly. The most important thing you can do to protect your vision at work is to always wear appropriate protective eyewear, which can prevent more than 90 per cent of serious eye injuries."

2020-Toy Related Eye Injuries Awareness Month

December is Toy Related Eye Injuries Awareness month

Make Sure Protective Eyewear is on Your Shopping List

The number of eye injuries related to such non-powder guns is increasing at an alarming rate. Another study published earlier this year showed an increase of almost 170 per cent over the last 23 years. If toy guns are on your shopping list, Acuity Eye Center Lahore Pakistan and the American Academy of Ophthalmology urge you to also give the gift of protective eyewear. Protective eyewear and proper guidance make BB, pellet and paintball gun activities safer for children.

To prevent eye injuries, ophthalmologists – physicians who specialize in medical and surgical eye care – share the following tips.

Buy the proper eye protection

Always wear eye protection that meets appropriate national standards when using non-powder guns.

Get a target

Have children shoot BB and pellet guns at paper or gel targets with a backstop to trap BBs or pellets.

Educate children

Teach them proper safety precautions for handling and using non-powder guns.

Be present

Ensure that there is always appropriate adult supervision.

Know what to do (and what not to) if an eye injury occurs

Seek immediate medical attention from an ophthalmologist. As you wait for medical help, make sure to never to touch, rub, apply pressure, or try to remove an object stuck in the eye. If an eye injury occurs, follow these important care and treatment guidelines.

“Ophthalmologists see firsthand the devastating damage toy guns can inflict on the eyes; children are blinded,” said Dianna Seldomridge, M.D., MBA, clinical spokesperson for the American Academy of Ophthalmology. “The good news is, most of these injuries are avoidable. Protective eyewear and adult supervision make non-powder gun activities much safer for children. If you can’t resist the Ralphies in your life, buy protective eyewear.”

Here is The Message of Our Lead Consultant Dr Zia Ul Mazhry,

As a parent, keeping your child safe from harm is likely one of your top priorities. Seeing your child happy is also important, and there's no doubt that playing with toys brings joy to your child. But toys can also be a great source of danger. It's hard to believe that a simple children's toy could cause harm, but accidents happen all the time. The guns, weapons, fireworks and laser pointers can cause severe damage to eyesight.

Toy Related Eye Injuries Awareness month

Toy Related Eye Injuries Awareness month

December is Toy Related Eye Injuries Awareness month

Acuity Eye Center Lahore Pakistan and the American Academy of Ophthalmology urges the public to celebrate with an eye on safety.

With the holiday shopping season now in full swing Acuity Eye Center Lahore Pakistan joins the American Academy of Ophthalmology in reminding the public of certain safety guidelines when choosing the perfect gifts for little ones. A number of studies show that some popular types of toys are commonly associated with childhood eye injuries. These include air guns and other toys that shoot projectiles, high-powered lasers, and sports equipment.

Ophthalmologists – physicians who specialize in medical and surgical eye care – treat the eye injuries that sometimes result from these products, and so have seen the traumatic results of what can happen. The Academy encourages parents to follow these tips when shopping for toys this holiday season.

Follow These Tips to Avoid Toy-Related Eye Injuries

1. Beware of airsoft, BB guns, and other projectile toys.

Beware of airsoft, BB guns, and other projectile toys.

Every year ophthalmologists treat thousands of patients with devastating eye injuries caused by seemingly safe toys. Avoid items with sharp, protruding or projectile parts such as airsoft guns, BB guns and other nonpowder gun–related toys. Foreign objects can easily propel into the sensitive tissue of the eye.

2. Never allow children to play with high-powered laser pointers.

Children playing with Laser Pointer

A number of recent reports in the United States and internationally show that children have sustained serious eye injuries by playing with high-powered lasers (between 1,500 and 6,000 milliwatts). Over the years, these lasers have become increasingly more powerful, with enough potential to cause severe retinal damage, with just seconds of laser exposure to the eye. The FDA advises the public to never aim or shine a laser pointer at anyone and to not buy laser pointers for children.

3. Read labels for age recommendations before you buy.

Toy safety Tips

To select appropriate gifts suited for a child's age, look for and follow the age recommendations and instructions about proper assembly, use, and supervision.

4. Don't just give presents. Make sure to be present.

Always make sure an adult is supervising when children are playing with potentially hazardous toys or games that could cause an eye injury.

5. Know what to do (and what not to).

If someone you know experiences an eye injury, seek immediate medical attention from an ophthalmologist. As you wait for medical help, make sure to never to touch, rub, apply pressure, or try to remove any object stuck in the eye. If an eye injury occurs, follow these important care and treatment guidelines.

“When the gift-giving and celebratory spirit of the holidays is in full swing, we can forget how easily kids can get injured when playing with certain toys,” said Jane C. Edmond M.D., a clinical spokesperson for the American Academy of Ophthalmology.” We hope people will take steps to shop and play responsibly this year. Following these tips can help make sure our loved ones have healthy vision for many holiday seasons to come.”

Here is The Message of Our Lead Consultant Dr. Zia Ul Mazhry,

The guns, weapons, fireworks and laser pointers can cause severe damage to eye sight.

Sports Eye Safety Awareness

April-2019 Sports Eye Safety Awareness Month

Basketball, Baseball and Air/Paintball Guns Top the List of Leading Causes of Eye Injuries

More than 40 percent of eye injuries that occur every year are related to sports or recreational activities. A recent study found that about 30,000 people in the U.S. went to an emergency department with a sports-related eye injury, a substantially higher estimate than previously reported. Three sports accounted for almost half of all injuries: basketball, baseball and air/paintball guns.

Basketball was the leading cause of injury in males, followed by baseball/softball, and air/paintball guns. Baseball or softball was the leading cause among females, followed by cycling and soccer. In support of Sports Eye Safety Month in April, Acuity Eye Center Lahore Pakistan and the American Academy of Ophthalmology are offering athletes of all ages guidance on how to protect their eyes.

Sports-related injuries can range from corneal abrasions and bruises on the lids to more serious, vision-threatening internal injuries, such as a retinal detachment and internal bleeding. About one-third of sports related eye injuries happen to kids.

The good news is that simply wearing protective eyewear can prevent about 90 percent of eye injuries.

Follow these tips to save your vision:

Wear the right eye protection:

For basketball, racquet sports, soccer and field hockey, wear protection with shatterproof polycarbonate lenses.

Put your helmet on:

For baseball, ice hockey and lacrosse, wear a helmet with a polycarbonate face mask or wire shield.

Know the standards:

Choose eye protection that meets American Society of Testing and Materials (ASTM) standards. See the Academy’s protective eyewear article for more details.

Throw out old gear:

Eye protection should be replaced when damaged or yellowed with age. Wear and tear may cause them to become weak and lose effectiveness.

Glasses won’t cut it:

Regular prescription glasses may shatter when hit by flying objects. If you wear glasses, try sports goggles on top to protect your eyes and your frames.

“Virtually all sports eye injuries could be prevented by wearing proper eye protection,” said ophthalmologist Dianna L. Seldomridge, M.D., clinical spokesperson for the Academy. “That’s why I always strongly encourage athletes to protect their eyes when participating in competitive sports.”

Here is the message from our lead consultant Professor Dr. Zia Ul Mazhry,

" Protection of your eyes from eye injury is your own hands mostly. The most important thing you can do to protect your vision at work is to always wear appropriate protective eyewear, which can prevent more than 90 per cent of serious eye injuries."

Anyone who experiences a sports eye injury should immediately visit an ophthalmologist, a physician specializing in medical and surgical eye care.

Eye Injury Protection Awareness

Eye Injuries Protection Awareness

March-2019 Eye Injuries Protection Awareness Month:

On-the-job safety goes well beyond avoiding slips, falls, and heavy lifting. Caring for your eyes should be a high priority and part of an overall workplace wellness routine. Each day, about 2,000 U.S. workers sustain a job-related eye injury that requires medical treatment. However, 90 percent of these accidents can be avoided by wearing eye protection. As part of an ongoing effort to stress the importance of workplace eye wellness, the Acuity Eye Center Lahore Pakistan and the American Academy of Ophthalmology, during the month of March, is encouraging the public to do right by their eyes and wear appropriate eye protection.

Protect your eyes

Workplace eye injuries cost more than $300 million a year in lost productivity, treatment, and compensation. These injuries range from simple eye strain to trauma, which may lead to permanent damage, vision loss, and blindness. This is particularly true for workers in construction, manufacturing, and mining. Approximately, 40 percent of eye injuries in the workplace happen in these three industries.

If an eye injury does occur, an individual should seek care from an ophthalmologist — a physician who specializes in the medical and surgical treatment of eye diseases and conditions — or go to an emergency room for immediate care.

Caring for your eyes on the job should not be limited to those who do physical labor, however. People who spend long hours working on a computer can experience eye discomfort. Focusing on small font type for hours on end can cause eye strain, fatigue, and headaches. Staring at screens for long periods can also leave eyes parched and red, causing eyes to become dry from lack of blinking. This happens frequently as computer screens or other digital displays reduce a person’s blink rate by as much as 50 percent.

The Academy provides tips to help avoid workplace eye injury or strain:

Wear protective eyewear:

Protective Eye Wear

Ensure that your eye protection is appropriate for the type of hazard that may be present in your workplace, such flying debris, falling objects, chemicals, intense light, and heat. Your eyewear must be American National Standards Institute ANSI-approved and OSHA compliant. You must use special-purpose safety glasses, goggles, face shield or helmet if you are near hazardous radiation welding, chemicals, lasers or fiber optics. For more info https://eyeacuity.com/uv-rays/

Position your computer 25 inches away:

Position your computer 25 inches away

If you are working on a desktop computer, try placing the monitor at an arm’s length away from your face. You may need to adjust the font size to appear larger at that distance.

Follow the 20-20-20 rule:

Follow the 20-20-20 rule

Eye strain and dry eye occur after long, continuous periods of viewing digital screens up close. To help alleviate this, take a break every 20 minutes by looking at an object 20 feet away for 20 seconds. Looking at a distance allows your eyes to relax and return to a regular rate of blinking again. Normally, people blink about 14 times a minute and with every blink, your eyes are lubricated with fluid that contains moisturizing elements, including oil.For more info click https://eyeacuity.com/eye-strain/

Reduce glare on your smartphone and digital screen:

While many new phones and digital devices have glass screens with excellent picture quality, they also produce a strong glare that can aggravate the eyes. If you use a glass screen device, adjust the low light filter setting to lower screen brightness or use a matte filter to reduce eye strain.

Adjust environmental lighting at your work:

If your computer screen is brighter than your office surroundings, your eyes need to work harder to see. You can reduce eye strain by adjusting the lighting in your surroundings.

"It takes only a few seconds to protect yourself from eye related issues that can cause vision problems," said Brenda Pagán-Durán, M.D., a clinical spokesperson for the American Academy of Ophthalmology. “I can’t stress enough the importance of incorporating eye wellness into your daily routine; whether it’s simply adjusting the setting on your computer monitor, or wearing appropriate protection to avoid serious eye injury. This is truly an ounce of prevention that can safeguard your vision.” Here is the message from our lead consultant Professor Dr. Zia Ul Mazhry,

" Your eyes are windows to the brain regularly eating good foods with nutrients like Omega-3 , Lutein zinc and Vitomen-c may help to take care of problems like Macular Degeneration and Cataract formation.Get your eyes examine regularly to find any eye decease that can be treated in early stages."
