August 2022 Children’s Eye Health & Safety Month

August 2022 Children’s Eye Health & Safety Month

Is Too Much Screen Time Harming Children’s Vision?

Acuity Eye Center Lahore Pakistan and the American Academy of Ophthalmology help parents separate facts from fiction.

As children spend more time tethered to screens, there is increasing concern about potential harm to their visual development. Ophthalmologists – physicians who specialize in medical and surgical eye care – are seeing a marked increase in children with dry eye and eye strain from too much screen time. But does digital eyestrain cause lasting damage? Should your child use reading glasses or computer glasses? As you send your kids back to school this month for more time with screens and books, Acuity Eye Center Lahore Pakistan and the American Academy of Ophthalmology are arming parents with the facts, so they can make informed choices about their children’s eye health.

It’s a fact that there is a worldwide epidemic of myopia, also known as nearsightedness. Since 1971, the incidence of nearsightedness in the US nearly doubled, to 42 percent. In Asia, up to 90 percent of teenagers and adults are nearsighted. Clearly, something is going on. But scientists can’t agree on exactly what.

A new study appearing in Ophthalmology, the journal of the American Academy of Ophthalmology, offers further evidence that at least part of the worldwide increase in nearsightedness has to do with near work activities; not just screens but also traditional books. And, that spending time outdoors—especially in early childhood—can slow the progression of nearsightedness. It remains unclear whether the rise in nearsightedness is due to focusing on phones all the time, to light interacting with our circadian rhythms to influence eye growth or none of the above.

Digital Strain

Digital Strain

While scientists look for a definitive answer, there is no doubt that most computer users experience digital eyestrain. Kids are no different from adults when it comes to digital eyestrain. They can experience dry eye, eye strain, headaches, and blurry vision, too. While symptoms are typically temporary, they may be frequent and persistent.

But this doesn’t mean they need a prescription for computer glasses or that they have developed an eye condition of middle-age that requires reading glasses, as some suggest. It also doesn’t mean that blue light coming from computer screens is damaging their eyes. It means they need to take more frequent breaks. This is because we don’t blink as often while using computers and other digital devices. Extended reading, writing, or other intensive work can also cause eye strain. Ophthalmologists recommend taking a 20-second break from near work every 20 minutes.

Here are 10 tips to help protect your child’s eyes from computer eyestrain

Here are 10 tips to help protect your child’s eyes from computer eyestrain:

  • Set a kitchen timer or a smart device timer to remind them.
  • Alternate reading an e-book with a real book and encourage kids to look up and out the window every two chapters
20-20-20 Rule
  • After completing a level in a video game, look out the window for 20 seconds.
  • Pre-mark books with a paperclip every few chapters to remind your child to look up. On an e-book, use the “bookmark” function for the same effect.
  • Avoid using a computer outside or in brightly lit areas, as the glare on the screen can create strain.
  • Adjust the brightness and contrast of your computer screen so that it feels comfortable for you.
  • Use good posture when using a computer and when reading.
Encourage your child to hold digital media farther away, 18 to 24 inches is ideal.
  • Encourage your child to hold digital media farther away, 18 to 24 inches is ideal.
  • Create a distraction that causes your child to look up every now and then.
  • Remind them to blink when watching a screen.

“I prefer to teach kids better habits, instead of supplying them a crutch like reading glasses to enable them to consume even more media,” said K. David Epley, M.D., clinical spokesperson for the American Academy of Ophthalmology. “If you run too far and your legs start hurting, you stop. Likewise, if you’ve been reading too long or watching videos too long, and your eyes start hurting, you should stop.”

Here is the message from our lead consultant Professor Dr. Zia Ul Mazhry,

"Your child’s vision is critical and even more critical is protecting it during everyday activities. Eye injuries occur most commonly during outdoor sports or athletics. The parents and guardians need to pay close attention as a caregiver. If the kids are left alone, will often opt to not wear protective eyewear when playing sports, let alone a helmet, due to a number of reasons. Therefore, it’s up to you to ensure your child’s eyes and vision are kept safe."

Healthy Vision Awareness Month

The Health Exam You Didn’t Know You Needed

Acuity Eye Center Lahore Pakistan and the American Academy of Ophthalmology say blindness is often preventable with regular exams

If you’re like most Americans surveyed in a recent Harris Poll, you probably thought you would notice a change in your vision if you had an eye disease. The fact is some of the leading causes of blindness—such as glaucoma or diabetic retinopathy—can begin without any symptoms. That’s why Acuity Eye Center Lahore Pakistan and the American Academy of Ophthalmology urge all healthy adults to get an eye exam at age 40, even if their vision seems fine. Early signs of disease and changes in vision may start to happen at this age.

“Even if you think you have 20/20 vision, set up a time to get your eyes checked. It may save your sight,” said Dianna Seldomridge, M.D., clinical spokesperson for the American Academy of Ophthalmology.

Here is the message of our lead consultant Professor Zia Ul Mazhry

There is a saying"Eyes are the windows to the soul".Healthy Vision is one of the best blessings of Almighty Allah at any given age. To protect your vision by quitting smoking, eating healthy foods, and having a regular comprehensive eye examination.

5 Steps to Lower Your Risk of Eye Disease

  • Know your family history

Certain eye diseases can be inherited. If you have a close relative with macular degeneration, you have a 50 per cent chance of developing this condition. A family history of glaucoma increases your glaucoma risk by four to nine times. Talk to family members about their eye conditions. It can help you and your ophthalmologist evaluate your risk.

  • Eat healthy foods

A diet low in fat and rich in fruits, vegetables, and whole grains, benefits the entire body, including the eyes. Eye-healthy food choices include citrus fruits, vegetable oils, nuts, whole grains, dark green leafy vegetables, and cold-water fish.

  • Stop smoking

Smoking increases the risk for eye diseases such as cataracts and age-related macular degeneration. Smoking also raises the risk for cardiovascular diseases which can indirectly influence your eye health. Tobacco smoke, including second-hand smoke, also worsens dry eyes.

  • Wear sunglasses

Exposure to ultraviolet UV light raises the risk of eye diseases, including cataracts, fleshy growths on the eye, and cancer. Always wear a hat and sunglasses with 100 per cent UV protection while outdoors.

“An eye exam doesn’t just check how well you can see, it evaluates the overall health of your eyes,” said Rebecca J. Taylor, M.D., clinical spokesperson for the American Academy of Ophthalmology. “The Academy encourages everyone, particularly if you’re over age 40, to get regular eye care. By making the vision a priority, we can help protect our sight as we age.”

Sports Eye Safety Awareness Month

Sports Eye Safety Awareness Month

Ophthalmologists Urge Eye Protection for Recreational and Professional Sports

New research shows that about 30,000 people in the U.S. go to emergency departments each year with sports-related eye injuries, a substantially higher estimate than previously reported. This April during Sports Eye Safety Month, Acuity Eye Center Lahore Pakistan and the American Academy of Ophthalmology remind the public that the right protective eyewear is the best defence against eye injury.

Three sports accounted for almost half of all trips to the emergency room: basketball, baseball, and air/paintball guns. Sports-related injuries can range from corneal abrasions and bruises on the lids to more serious, vision-threatening internal injuries, such as retinal detachment and internal bleeding.

Ophthalmologists — physicians who specialize in medical and surgical eye care — continue to remind the public that most sports-related eye injuries are avoidable.

Here are some tips for both the professional athlete and the little league star to stay safe:

Tips to stay safe

Wear the right eye protection

For basketball, racquet sports, soccer and field hockey, wear protection with shatterproof polycarbonate lenses.

Wear the right eye protection

Put your helmet on

For baseball, ice hockey and lacrosse, wear a helmet with a polycarbonate face mask or wire shield.

Know the standards

Choose eye protection that meets the American Society of Testing and Materials (ASTM) standards. See the Academy’s protective eyewear article for more details.

Throw out old gear

Eye protection should be replaced when damaged or yellowed with age. Wear and tear may cause them to become weak and lose effectiveness.

Glasses won’t cut it

Regular prescription glasses may shatter when hit by flying objects. If you wear glasses, try sports goggles on top to protect your eyes and your frames.

did you know?

“I’ve treated many patients with eye trauma because of an unintentional blow to the face,” said Rahul N. Khurana, M.D., clinical spokesperson for the American Academy of Ophthalmology. “Athletes often engage in these seemingly safe, yet rugged, high-impact sports with zero awareness about the potential risk factors. This is why eye protection is critical and can greatly reduce the number of emergency room visits treated each year.”

Here is the message from our lead consultant Professor Dr Zia Ul Mazhry,

" Protection of your eyes from eye injury is your own hands mostly. The most important thing you can do to protect your vision at work is to always wear appropriate protective eyewear, which can prevent more than 90 per cent of serious eye injuries."

AMD Awareness Month

AMD Awareness Month

Age-related Macular Degeneration: Poised for a New Treatment Era

For more than a decade, ophthalmologists have treated wet age-related macular degeneration (AMD) with eye injections given every month or two, and dry AMD with antioxidant vitamins. These treatments were groundbreaking when introduced, offering hope for the first time that this sight-threatening disease could be slowed, and in some cases stopped or even reversed. As we mark February as AMD Awareness Month, Acuity Eye Center Lahore Pakistan and the American Academy of Ophthalmology is highlighting what the next decade may hold for the 11 million Americans suffering from AMD.

The good news is that AMD treatment continues to evolve to the benefit of patients. Ophthalmologists expect to soon have more effective options to protect people from going legally blind from AMD.

"While our current treatments have made a huge difference in the lives of hundreds of thousands of people, new treatments offer hope to patients whose AMD previously could not be treated,” said Sunir J. Garg, MD, FACS, a retina specialist and clinical spokesperson for the American Academy of Ophthalmology. “New treatments will also help patients receive beneficial treatment more conveniently than ever before."

Here is the message from our lead consultant Professor Dr Zia Ul Mazhry,

" A common Reason for deterioration of vision in old age is age-related macular degeneration (AMD). This condition had been incurable until recently. Many Preventive and curative treatment has become available for AMD. Please get your eyes evaluated for this common reason for legal blindness."

Dry AMD

It can be divided into three forms: early, intermediate, and late. For those with an intermediate disease, a formulation of antioxidant vitamins called the AREDS2 formula can help many patients reduce their risk of vision loss. But for those with late-stage disease, also called geographic atrophy, there is no treatment available. However, there are several promising clinical trials underway.

The Academy offers these steps to help people take control of their eye health:

Reduce the risk of Age-related Macular degeneration

1. Get regular comprehensive medical eye exams.

Get regular comprehensive medical eye exams.

Because AMD often has no early warning signs, getting regular comprehensive eye exams from an ophthalmologist is critical. Academy guidelines state that adults with no signs or risk factors for eye disease get a baseline eye disease screening at age 40 — the time when early signs of disease and changes in vision may start to occur. From age 40 to 54, get your eyes examined every 2 to 4 years; from 55 to 64, every 1 to 3 years. By age 65, get an exam every one to two years, even in the absence of symptoms or eye problems. If you have risk factors for eye disease, you will need to be examined more frequently.

2. Quit smoking.

Quit smoking

Numerous studies show smoking increases the risk of developing AMD, and the speed at which it progresses. Smokers are twice as likely to develop macular degeneration compared with a nonsmoker

3. Eat a well-balanced diet.

Eat a well-balanced diet

Many studies demonstrate that eating a diet rich in fruits, vegetables, and nutrient-packed foods, such as salmon and nuts, may reduce the risk of AMD. Research also suggests that patients who ate fresh fish, an important source of omega-3s, were at lower risk of developing AMD.

4. Exercise regularly.

Exercising three times a week can reduce the risk of developing wet AMD by 70 per cent. Studies also show that physical activity may lower the odds of both the early and late stages of AMD.

5. Know your family’s eye health history.

If you have a close relative with AMD, you have a 50 per cent greater chance of developing the condition. Before your next eye exam, speak with your family about their eye health history. You may need more frequent eye exams based on your family history.

January Glaucoma Awareness Month

Glaucoma Does Discriminate: Here’s What You Need to Know to Protect Yourself

Acuity Eye Center Lahore Pakistan and the American Academy of Ophthalmology urges people at risk to be screened for this potentially blinding eye disease.

Glaucoma is one of the leading causes of vision loss, affecting about 3 million people in the United States. But this potentially blinding eye disease does not affect all people equally. During Glaucoma Awareness Month in January, Acuity Eye Center Lahore Pakistan and the American Academy of Ophthalmology is urging people to be screened, especially if they are at increased risk of glaucoma.

  • African Americans are 6 to 8 times more likely to get glaucoma than white Americans. Blindness from glaucoma is 6 to 8 times more common in African Americans than in white Americans
  • People with diabetes are 2 times more likely to get glaucoma than people without diabetes
  • Hispanic Americans face an increased risk compared to African Americans, but the disease may also progress faster as they age, compared with other ethnic groups
  • Asians are at an increased risk for the less common types of glaucoma: angle-closure glaucoma and normal-tension glaucoma
  • Also at risk are people over age 40, those who are severely nearsighted, and those who have a family history of glaucoma.

Glaucoma is a group of diseases that damages the eye’s optic nerve. The optic nerve transmits visual information to the brain, allowing us to see. Because glaucoma often progresses slowly, affecting just peripheral or side vision, people with glaucoma can lose most of their vision before they even experience any symptoms. Central vision, the vision used to read, drive or watch TV, is unaffected until the disease is advanced.

“Just because you think you can see well, doesn’t mean all is well,” said Dianna Seldomridge, M.D., clinical spokesperson for the American Academy of Ophthalmology. “Once vision is lost to glaucoma, it can’t be regained. That’s why regular screening, especially among those at higher risk for glaucoma, is absolutely vital. When caught early, glaucoma can be treated with eye drops or in-office laser treatment. But in advanced cases, surgery may be required to slow the vision loss and prevent further damage.”

Here is the message from our lead consultant Dr Zia Ul Mazhry,

Glaucoma is known as a silent killer of sight in English. Sariq un Nazar is the name given to it in Arabic, meaning thief of the sight. Patients are often surprised when their ophthalmologist tells them they have glaucoma because they don’t have symptoms. There is no need to be scared about the diagnosis as many modern treatments are able to prevent further loss in glaucoma. The good news is that today’s innovative treatments and surgical techniques are better than ever.” What matters is a timely diagnosis which may be accomplished by careful testing and investigations by a caring ophthalmologist.”

Some Seniors May Be Eligible for Glaucoma Screening

For individuals age 65 or older who are concerned about their risk of eye disease, you may be eligible for a medical eye exam.

Diagnosing Glaucoma Early Can Help Preserve Sight

There’s no cure for glaucoma. However, when caught early, we can take steps to slow or halt vision loss. Often, treatments as simple as specialised eye drops that reduce the pressure building up inside of your eye can make a difference.

Toy Related Eye Injuries Awareness

December is Toy Related Eye Injuries Awareness Month

Make Sure Protective Eyewear is on Your Shopping List

Acuity Eye Center Lahore Pakistan and the American Academy of Ophthalmology urge the public to celebrate with an eye on safety.

The number of eye injuries related to such non-powder guns is increasing at an alarming rate. Another study published earlier this year showed an increase of almost 170 percent over the last 23 years. If toy guns are on your shopping list, Acuity Eye Center Lahore Pakistan and the American Academy of Ophthalmology urge you to also give the gift of protective eyewear. Protective eyewear and proper guidance make BB, pellet, and paintball gun activities safer for children.

To prevent eye injuries, ophthalmologists – physicians who specialize in medical and surgical eye care – share the following tips:

  • Buy the proper eye protection.

Always wear eye protection that meets appropriate national standards when using non-powder guns.

  • Get a target:

Have children shoot BB and pellet guns at paper or gel targets with a backstop to trap BBs or pellets.

  • Educate children: Teach them proper safety precautions for handling and using non-powder guns.
  • Be present:

Ensure that there is always appropriate adult supervision.

  • Know what to do (and what not to)if an eye injury occurs: Seek immediate medical attention from an ophthalmologist. As you wait for medical help, make sure never to touch, rub, apply pressure, or try to remove an object stuck in the eye. If an eye injury occurs, follow these important care and treatment guidelines.

“Ophthalmologists see firsthand the devastating damage toy guns can inflict on the eyes; children are blinded,” said Dianna Seldomridge, M.D., MBA, clinical spokesperson for the American Academy of Ophthalmology. “The good news is, most of these injuries are avoidable. Protective eyewear and adult supervision make non-powder gun activities much safer for children. If you can’t resist the Ralphies in your life, buy protective eyewear.”

Here is The Message of Our Lead Consultant Dr. Zia Ul Mazhry,

As a parent, keeping your child safe from harm is likely one of your top priorities. Seeing your child happy is also important, and there's no doubt that playing with toys brings joy to your child. But toys can also be a great source of danger. It's hard to believe that a simple children's toy could cause harm, but accidents happen all the time. The guns, weapons, fireworks, and laser pointers can cause severe damage to eyesight.

Mard-e-Nayab-Abou ben Adhem-Urdu Poem-

Abou Ben Adhem Poem by Leigh Hunt

Abou Ben Adhem Poem by Leigh Hunt

Abou Ben Adhem (may his tribe increase!)

Awoke one night from a deep dream of peace,

And saw, within the moonlight in his room,

Making it rich and like a lily in bloom,

An angel writing in a book of gold:—

Exceeding peace had made Ben Adhem bold,

And to the presence in the room, he said,

"What writest thou?"—The vision raised its head,

And with a look made of all sweet accord,

Answered, "The names of those who love the Lord."

"And is mine one?" said Abou. "Nay, not so,"

Replied the angel. Abou spoke more low,

But cheerly still; and said, "I pray thee, then,

Write me as one that loves his fellow men."

The angel wrote and vanished. The next night

It came again with a great wakening light,

And showed the names whom love of God had blest,

And lo! Ben Adhem's name led all the rest.
