Costume and Cosmetic Eye Contact Lens Safety Month

Costume and Cosmetic Eye Contact Lens Safety Month

October is Costume and Cosmetic Eye Contact Lens Safety Month

Consult an Eye Care Professional if Your Halloween Costume Includes Scary Eyes

Acuity Eye Center Lahore Pakistan and the American Academy of Ophthalmology warn about the dangers of illegal costume contact lenses lurking on store shelves and invading online retailers

Creepy costume lenses might add a spine-tingling thrill to your Halloween costume, but wearing costume contact lenses without a prescription can lead to serious eye infections or permanent vision loss. Decorative lenses are medical devices, not costume jewellery. They must be prescribed and fitted by an eye care professional, just like regular contact lenses. That's why Acuity Eye Center Lahore Pakistan and the American Academy of Ophthalmology are urging people to buy decorative contact lenses only from retailers who require a prescription and sell FDA-approved products.

A poorly fitted contact lens can easily scrape the cornea, the outer layer of the eye, making the eye more vulnerable to infection-causing bacteria and viruses. Sometimes scarring from an infection is so bad, a corneal transplant is required to restore vision. The most extreme cases can end in blindness.

Although it is illegal to sell non-prescription contact lenses, they are available at costume shops, gas stations, corner shops, and online. Research shows that people who purchase contacts without a prescription face a 16-fold increased risk of developing an infection.

The Academy offers the following tips to help ensure your Halloween costume won’t haunt you long after Oct 31:

Here Are Some Tips for Use of  Cosmetic/Costume Contact Lenses

See an eye care professional who gets a prescription for costume contact lenses

See an eye care professional who gets a prescription for costume contact lenses

Packaging that claims “one size fits all” or “no need to see an eye doctor” is false. Get properly fitted by an ophthalmologist (physicians and surgeons who specialize in medical and surgical eye care) or optometrist (healthcare professionals who provide primary vision care).

Proper care of contact lenses

Proper care of contact lenses

Even if you have a prescription for contact lenses, proper care remains essential. Cleanliness is an important aspect of proper contact lens care and handling of your new lenses. Your hands should be clean and free of any foreign substances when you handle your lenses:

Never share contact Lenses

Never share contact Lenses

Pink eye isn’t a good look, even for a costume. Sharing contacts can spread germs, causing conditions such as pink eye, which is highly contagious.

Spread the word to others about the dangers of costume contacts

Don’t let friends make the mistake of wearing costume contacts without a prescription.

“The FDA oversees the safety and effectiveness of all contact lenses because they are a medical device, even the ghoulish ones people wear on Halloween,” said Thomas L. Steinemann, MD, a clinical spokesperson for the American Academy of Ophthalmology. “It’s important that you use only FDA-approved lenses prescribed for your eyes.”

Here is the message of our Lead Consultant Professor Dr Zia Ul Mazhry

" Please be careful, the poorly fitted contact lenses could be the beginning of serious eye problems. When it comes to coloured or decorative contact lens the only safe when these are prescribed by a qualified eye doctor and purchased from an authentic source."

Computer Eye Strain

Computer Eye Strain

There are some steps that can relief computer eye strain in the following:

Get a comprehensive eye exam

Get a comprehensive eye exam

Having a routine comprehensive eye exam every year is the most important thing you can do to prevent or treat computer vision problems. During your exam, be sure to tell your eye doctor how often you use a computer and digital devices at work and at home.

Measure how far your eyes are from your screen when you sit at your computer and bring this measurement to your exam so your eye doctor can test your eyes at that specific working distance.

Use proper lighting for using computer

Use proper lighting for using computer

Eye strain often is caused by excessively bright light either from outdoor sunlight coming in through a window or from harsh interior lighting. When you use a computer, your ambient lighting should be about half as bright as that typically found in most offices.

Eliminate exterior light by closing drapes, shades, or blinds. Reduce interior lighting by using fewer light bulbs or fluorescent tubes, or use lower intensity bulbs and tubes.

Also, if possible, position your computer screen so windows are to the side, instead of in front or behind it.

Many computer users find their eyes feel better if they can avoid working under overhead fluorescent lights. If possible, turn off the overhead fluorescent lights in your office and use floor lamps that provide indirect "soft white" LED lighting instead.

Sometimes switching to "full-spectrum" fluorescent lighting that more closely approximates the light spectrum emitted by sunlight can be more comforting for computer work than regular fluorescent tubes. But even full spectrum lighting can cause discomfort if it's too bright.

Try reducing the number of fluorescent tubes installed above your computer workspace if you are bothered by overhead lighting.

Upgrade your display

If you have not already done so, replace your old tube-style monitor (called a cathode ray tube or CRT) with a flat-panel LED (light-emitting diode) screen with an anti-reflective surface.

Old-fashioned CRT screens can cause a noticeable "flicker" of images, which is a major cause of computer eye strain. Even if this flicker is imperceptible, it still can contribute to eye strain and fatigue during computer work.

To ease eye strain, make sure you use good lighting and sit at a proper distance from the computer screen.

Complications due to flicker are even more likely if the refresh rate of the monitor is less than 75 hertz (Hz). If you must use a CRT at work, adjust the display settings to the highest possible refresh rate.

When choosing a new flat panel display, select a screen with the highest resolution possible. Resolution is related to the "dot pitch" of the display. Generally, displays with a lower dot pitch have sharper images. Choose a display with a dot pitch of .28 mm or smaller.

Also, choose a relatively large display. For a desktop computer, select a display that has a diagonal screen size of at least 19 inches.

Adjust your computer display settings

Adjust your computer display settings

Adjusting the display settings of your computer can help reduce eye strain and fatigue. Generally, these adjustments are beneficial:

  • Brightness: Adjust the brightness of the display so it's approximately the same as the brightness of your surrounding workstation. As a test, look at the white background of this Web page. If it looks like a light source, it's too bright. If it seems dull and grey, it may be too dark.
  • Text size and contrast: Adjust the text size and contrast for comfort, especially when reading or composing long documents. Usually, black print on a white background is the best combination of comfort.
  • Colour temperature: This is a technical term used to describe the spectrum of visible light emitted by a colour display. Blue light is short-wavelength visible light that is associated with more eye strain than longer wavelength hues, such as orange and red. Reducing the colour temperature of your display lowers the amount of blue light emitted by a colour display for better long-term viewing comfort.

Blink more often

Blinking more often

Blinking is very important when working at a computer; blinking moistens your eyes to prevent dryness and irritation.

When staring at a screen, people blink less frequently — only about one-third as often as they normally do — and many blinks performed during computer work are only partial lid closures, according to studies.

Tears coating the eye evaporate more rapidly during long non-blinking phases and this can cause dry eyes. Also, the air in many office environments is dry, which can increase how quickly your tears evaporate, placing you at greater risk for dry eye problems.

If you experience dry eye symptoms, ask your eye doctor about artificial tears for use during the day.

By the way, don't confuse lubricating eye drops with the drops formulated to "get the red out." The latter can indeed make your eyes look better — they contain ingredients that reduce the size of blood vessels on the surface of your eyes to "whiten" them. But they are not necessarily formulated to reduce dryness and irritation.

To reduce your risk of dry eyes during computer use, try this exercise: Every 20 minutes, blink 10 times by closing your eyes as if falling asleep (very slowly). This will help rewet your eyes.

Exercise your eyes

20-20-20 Rule

Another cause of computer eye strain is focusing on fatigue. To reduce your risk of tiring your eyes by constantly focusing on your screen, look away from your computer at least every 20 minutes and gaze at a distant object (at least 20 feet away) for at least 20 seconds. Some eye doctors call this the "20-20-20 rule." Looking far away relaxes the focusing muscle inside the eye to reduce fatigue.

Another exercise is to look far away at an object for 10-15 seconds, then gaze at something up close for 10-15 seconds. Then look back at the distant object. Do this 10 times. This exercise reduces the risk of your eyes' focusing ability to "lock-up" (a condition called accommodative spasm) after prolonged computer work.

Both of these exercises will reduce the risk of computer eye strain. Also, remember to blink frequently during the exercises to reduce your risk of computer-related dry eye.

Modify your Workstation

Modify your Workstation

If you need to look back and forth between a printed page and your computer screen, place the written pages on a copy stand adjacent to your screen.

Light the copy stand properly. You may want to use a desk lamp, but make sure it doesn't shine into your eyes or onto your computer screen.

Poor posture also contributes to computer vision syndrome. Adjust your workstation and chair to the correct height so your feet rest comfortably on the floor.

Position your computer screen so it's 20 to 24 inches from your eyes. The centre of your screen should be about 10 to 15 degrees below your eyes for comfortable positioning of your head and neck.

Aging Eye Month

September 2020 is Healthy Aging Eye Month

September 2020 is Healthy Aging Eye Month

Ophthalmologists Encourage Making Your Eyes Part of a Healthy Aging Strategy

Acuity Eye Center Lahore Pakistan and the American Academy of Ophthalmology urge people to protect their health and vision

According to a national survey released by the American Academy of Ophthalmology, nearly two out of three adults report having eye or vision problems. A significant percentage of them, however, fail to seek medical attention in the form of regular, sight-saving eye exams. In observance of Healthy Aging Month in September, Acuity Eye Center Lahore Pakistan joins the American Academy of Ophthalmology in emphasizing the importance of having regular eye exams to maintain healthy eyes and vision.

Some of the more common age-related eye diseases include:

Age-Related Macular Degeneration

It is an eye disease that can blur the sharp, central vision you need for activities like reading and driving.

Age-Related Macular Degeneration

Cataract

A cataract is a dense, cloudy area that forms in the lens of the eye. A cataract begins when proteins in the eye form clumps that prevent the lens from sending clear images to the retina. The retina works by converting the light that comes through the lens into signals.

Cataract

Diabetic Retinopathy

It is a diabetes complication that affects eyes. It's caused by damage to the blood vessels of the light-sensitive tissue at the back of the eye (retina).

Diabetic Retinopathy

Glaucoma

It is a group of eye conditions that damage the optic nerve, the health of which is vital for good vision. This damage is often caused by abnormally high pressure in your eye.

Glaucoma

Early detection and treatment of these conditions can help to save sight before vision loss occurs. Ophthalmologists – the physicians that specialize in medical and surgical eye care – recommend a dilated comprehensive eye exam as the best way to prevent these conditions from becoming debilitating.

Adults Do Not Get Eye Exams as Often as Recommended

The survey results emphasize a need for more education about the importance of medical eye exams. Findings showed that 64 percent of adults had at least one or more of the following issues with their eyes or vision:

  • Difficulty seeing at night
  • Blurry vision
  • Reading up close
  • Flashes of light
  • Red, Watery eyes
  • Double vision.

Despite experiencing some level of impairment, only 13 percent admitted they had been seen by an ophthalmologist.

How Often Do Adults Need Eye Exams?

How Often Do Adults Need Eye Exams?

The Academy recommends that a healthy adult get a baseline eye exam at age 40, even if they have no history of eye problems or eye disease. Those who have chronic conditions, such as diabetes or high blood pressure, may require more frequent exams.

Here is the message from our lead consultant Professor Dr. Zia Ul Mazhry,

" Aging is not lost youth but a new stage of opportunity and strength. You can't avoid age. However, we can avoid some aging. Continue to do things, be active. Take care of your health, especially the vision because this will keep you connected to the rest of the world during the aging process."

Chloroquine-HCQ-Plaquenil-Retinal toxicity

Chloroquine-HCQ-Plaquenil-Retinal toxicity

It is a very safe and effective drug but, like all medicines, it can cause side effects. It is known that some people who take chloroquine for more than five years and/or in high doses are at increased risk of damage to their retina, the light-sensitive layer of cells at the back of the eye. This is known as retinal toxicity or retinopathy.

Chloroquine can affect your eyes

In some people, Plaquenil can cause a condition called chloroquine retinopathy, often referred to as bulls-eye maculopathy. ... As the disease progresses, it begins to affect central vision and becomes life-altering. The changes are most often permanent, but in some cases, a vision has improved.

Chloroquine can cause Retinopathy

Chloroquine (HCQ) retinopathy can result in permanent vision loss. In the early stages of HCQ retinopathy, patients are usually asymptomatic with the preservation of visual acuity. Chloroquine retinopathy is caused by the build-up of the systemic drug and thus the findings are bilateral and symmetric. The early signs of chloroquine toxicity are macular edema and/or bilateral granular depigmentation of the RPE in the macula.

Symptoms of retinal toxicity?

In the early stages of HCQ retinal toxicity, most of the patients could be asymptomatic. When the first symptoms start to appear their complaints are the following: trouble with reading, diminished color vision, fine visual alteration due to the central or paracentral scotoma.

Screening for chloroquine retinopathy

Screening for chloroquine retinopathy

The aim of screening is not to prevent retinopathy but to detect the earliest definitive signs of it before a patient notices any symptoms. All people who start using chloroquine should need an initial eye exam and required tests. All individuals who have taken chloroquine for greater than 5 years should receive annual screening for retinopathy.

The screening tests are:

  1. BCVA
  2. Digital Color Vision Test
  3. Visual Field
  4. Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT)
  5. Digital Fundus Photograph

The Screening tests are performed as under

The 1st test for Chloroquine-BCVA-Visual Acuity

BCVA

Resolving power of the eye is known as Visual Acuity. Visual acuity (VA) is acuteness or clearness of vision, especially form vision, which is dependent on the sharpness of the retinal focus within the eye, the sensitivity of the nervous elements, and the interpretative faculty of the brain.

The 2nd test-Digital Color Vision Test

Digital Color Vision Test

A color vision test, also known as the Ishihara color test, measures your ability to tell the difference among colors. If you don't pass this test, you may have poor color vision, or your doctor may tell you that you're color blind.

The 3rd test-Visual Field

Visual field

A visual field test is a method of measuring an individual's entire scope of vision, that is their central and peripheral (side) vision.

The 4th Test-Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT)

Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT)

OCT is an imaging method used to generate a picture of the back of the eye, called the retina. The picture is made by precisely measuring the amount of a dim red light that reflects off the retina.

The 5th test- Digital Color vision Test

Fundus photograph

A digital fundus camera is used to take an image of the fundus — the back portion of the eye that includes the retina, macula, fovea, optic disc, and posterior pole. It helps to detect diagnosis and follow chloroquine toxicity closely.

No signs of retinopathy

If all the tests show a normal retina then there are no signs of retinopathy. The images of your retina will be kept on file and you will be invited back 6 months later for a repeat of the tests. The new images will be compared to the original ones to check for any changes. You will continue to be screened every year until you stop taking chloroquine.

Children’s Eye Health & Safety Month

Children’s Eye Health & Safety Month

August is Children’s Eye Health & Safety Month

Is Too Much Screen Time Harming Children’s Vision?

Acuity Eye Center Lahore Pakistan and the American Academy of Ophthalmology help parents separate the facts from fiction.

As children spend more time tethered to screens, there is increasing concern about potential harm to their visual development. Ophthalmologists – physicians who specialize in medical and surgical eye care – are seeing a marked increase in children with dry eye and eye strain from too much screen time. But does digital eyestrain cause lasting damage? Should your child use reading glasses or computer glasses? As you send your kids back to school this month for more time with screens and books, Acuity Eye Center Lahore Pakistan and the American Academy of Ophthalmology is arming parents with the facts, so they can make informed choices about their children’s eye health.

It’s a fact that there is a world-wide epidemic of myopia, also known as nearsightedness. Since 1971, the incidence of nearsightedness in the US nearly doubled, to 42 percent. In Asia, up to 90 percent of teenagers and adults are nearsighted. Clearly, something is going on. But scientists can’t agree on exactly what.

A new study appearing in Ophthalmology, the journal of the American Academy of Ophthalmology, offers further evidence that at least part of the worldwide increase in nearsightedness has to do with near work activities; not just screens but also traditional books. And, that spending time outdoors—especially in early childhood—can slow the progression of nearsightedness. It remains unclear whether the rise in nearsightedness is due to focusing on phones all the time, or to light interacting with our circadian rhythms to influence eye growth or none of the above.

Digital Strain

While scientists look for a definitive answer, there is no doubt that most computer users experience digital eyestrain. Kids are no different from adults when it comes to digital eyestrain. They can experience dry eye, eye strain, headaches, and blurry vision, too. While symptoms are typically temporary, they may be frequent and persistent.

But this doesn’t mean they need a prescription for computer glasses or that they have developed an eye condition of middle-age that requires reading glasses, as some suggest. It also doesn’t mean that blue light coming from computer screens is damaging their eyes. It means they need to take more frequent breaks. This is because we don’t blink as often while using computers and other digital devices. Extended reading, writing, or other intensive near work can also cause eye strain. Ophthalmologists recommend taking a 20-second break from near work every 20 minutes.

Tips to help protect your child’s eyes from computer eyestrain

Here are 10 tips to help protect your child’s eyes from computer eyestrain:

  • Set a kitchen timer or a smart device timer to remind them.
  • Alternate reading an e-book with a real book and encourage kids to look up and out the window every two chapters.
20-20-20 Rule
  • After completing a level in a video game, look out the window for 20 seconds.
  • Pre-mark books with a paperclip every few chapters to remind your child to look up. On an e-book, use the “bookmark” function for the same effect.
  • Avoid using a computer outside or in brightly lit areas, as the glare on the screen can create strain.
  • Adjust the brightness and contrast of your computer screen so that it feels comfortable to you.
  • Use good posture when using a computer and when reading.
Encourage your child to hold digital media farther away, 18 to 24 inches is ideal.
  • Encourage your child to hold digital media farther away, 18 to 24 inches is ideal.
  • Create a distraction that causes your child to look up every now and then.
  • Remind them to blink when watching a screen.

“I prefer to teach kids better habits, instead of supplying them a crutch like reading glasses to enable them to consume even more media,” said K. David Epley, M.D., clinical spokesperson for the American Academy of Ophthalmology. “If you run too far and your legs start hurting, you stop. Likewise, if you’ve been reading too long or watching videos too long, and your eyes start hurting, you should stop.”

Here is the message from our lead consultant Professor Dr. Zia Ul Mazhry,

"Your child’s vision is critical and even more critical is protecting it during everyday activities. Eye injuries occur most commonly during outdoor sports or athletic. The parents and guardian need to pay close attention as a caregiver. If the kids are left alone, will often opt to not wear protective eyewear when playing sports, let alone a helmet, due to a number of reasons. Therefore, it’s up to you to ensure your child’s eyes and vision are kept safe."

UV rays on Eyes

Sunglasses: Your Prescription for Eye Health

Acuity Eye Centre Lahore Pakistan and the American Academy of Ophthalmology urge you to protect your eyes from the sun’s damaging UV rays.

Next time you step outside to enjoy the summer sun, don’t forget to bring a pair of sunglasses. Most people know that the sun’s damaging ultraviolet rays are bad for the skin. But did you know that too much sun on unprotected eyes increases the risk of eye diseases? This summer, Acuity Eye Center Lahore Pakistan and the American Academy of Ophthalmology remind you that sunglasses are more than a bold fashion statement, they are a smart health choice.

SunGlasses

Long-term exposure to the sun without proper protection can increase the risk of eye disease, including cataract, macular degeneration, growths on the eye, and a rare form of eye cancer. Even short-term exposure can damage the eyes. Sun reflecting off water can cause a painful sunburn on the front part of the eye, called photokeratitis. It causes redness, blurry vision, sensitivity to bright light, and in rare cases, even temporary vision loss.

The good news is that prevention is simple: Wear sunglasses that block 99 to 100 percent of both UVA and UVB radiation. When purchasing sunglasses, ophthalmologists – physicians who specialize in medical and surgical eye care – urge the public to choose substance over style, and consider these 6 shopping tips:

  1. Shop labels. The single most important thing to look for when buying sunglasses is a sticker or tag indicating that they block 99 to 100 percent of both UVA and UVB radiation.
  2. Buy oversized. The more coverage from sunglasses, the less sun damage inflicted on the eyes. Consider buying oversized glasses or wraparound-style glasses, which help cut down on UV entering the eye from the side.
  3. Don’t be fooled by the color. While very dark lenses may look cool, they do not necessarily block more UV rays.
  4. Consider your sport. Some sunglasses come with amber, green or gray lenses. They do not block more sun but can increase contrast, which may be useful for athletes who play sports such as baseball or golf.
  5. Consider polarized lenses. Polarization reduces glare coming off reflective surfaces like water or pavement. This does not offer more protection from the sun but can make activities like driving or being on the water safer or more enjoyable.
  6. Don’t break the bank! Sunglasses don't have to cost a lot of money to provide adequate eye protection. Less expensive pairs marked as 100 percent UV-blocking can be just as effective as pricier options.

If you doubt your sunglasses have the UV protection claimed by a retail tag or if they are simply old and you want to make sure, take them to an optical shop. Any shop that has a UV light meter can test your sunglasses.

Uv Blocking Glasses

“It’s important to protect your eyes year-round, not just during the summer,” said Dianna Seldomridge, MD, clinical spokesperson for the American Academy of Ophthalmology. “Harmful UV rays are present even on cloudy days. Wearing a wide-brimmed hat also cuts down on exposure. And don’t forget babies and kids. They also need to wear hats and sunglasses.”

Here is the message from our lead consultant Professor Dr. Zia Ul Mazhry,

" Life without eyes is not easy, take care of them. Your eyes are your most important tools – Protect them! You and Your kids need to wear eye-protective glasses because the eyes are vulnerable to any type of UV damage."

Solar Eclipse-Eye Protection

Solar Eclipse-Save your Eyes
