Seven Myths About Children’s Eyes

Acuity Eye Center Lahore Pakistan and the American Academy of Ophthalmology reveal seven common misunderstandings about children's eye health.

Think you have the facts on your child’s eye care? When is the right time to have their eyes checked? Is too much screen time damaging their eyes? Do they need to wear sunglasses? There are a lot of myths and misinformation out there about children’s eye health. Don’t turn to Dr. Google for answers, ask your ophthalmologist — a physician who specializes in medical and surgical eye care — if you want to set your child up for a lifetime of good vision.

Here, Acuity Eye Center Lahore Pakistan and the American Academy of Ophthalmology debunk seven common myths about children’s eye health:

Pink eye only happens in young children

While young kids are known for getting pink eye, due to close contact in daycare centers, so can teenagers, college students, and adults — especially those who don’t clean their contacts properly. The best way to keep the pink eye from spreading is to practice good hygiene, including washing your hands, not touching your eyes, and using clean towels and other products around the face.

Antibiotics are necessary to cure your child’s pink eye

Antibiotics are rarely necessary to treat pink eye. There are three types of pink eye: viral, bacterial, and allergic conjunctivitis. Most cases are caused by viral infections or allergies and do not respond to antibiotics. Antibiotics may be prescribed for bacterial conjunctivitis depending on severity. Mild cases of bacterial conjunctivitis usually resolve on their own within 7 to 14 days without treatment.

Sun is bad for your eyes

While it’s true that long-term exposure to the sun without proper protection can increase the risk of eye disease, some studies suggest sun exposure is necessary for normal visual development. Children who have less sun exposure seem to be at higher risk for developing myopia or nearsightedness. Just make sure they’re protected with UV-blocking sunglasses and sunscreen.

Blue light from screens is damaging children’s vision

Contrary to what you may be reading on the Internet, blue light is not blinding you or your screen-obsessed kids. While it is true that nearsightedness is becoming more common, blue light isn’t the culprit. In fact, we are exposed to much more blue light naturally from the sun than we are from our screens.

The important thing to remember is to take frequent breaks. The Academy recommends a 20-20-20 rule: look at an object at least 20 feet away every 20 minutes for at least 20 seconds.

Vision loss only happens to adults

The eyes of a child with amblyopia (lazy eye) may look normal, but this eye condition can steal sight if not treated. Amblyopia is when vision in one of the child’s eyes is reduced because the eye and brain are not working together properly. Strabismus (crossed eyes) is another eye condition that can cause vision loss in a child. Strabismus is when the eyes do not line up in the same direction when focusing on an object.

All farsighted children need glasses

Most children are farsighted early in life. It’s actually normal. It doesn’t necessarily mean your child needs glasses because they use their focusing muscles to provide clear vision for both distance and near vision. Children do need glasses when their farsightedness blurs their vision or leads to strabismus. They will also need glasses if they are significantly more farsighted in one eye compared with the other, a condition that puts them at risk of developing amblyopia.

There is no difference between a vision screening and a vision exam

While it’s true that your child’s eyes should be checked regularly, a less invasive vision screening by a pediatrician, family doctor, ophthalmologist, optometrist, orthoptist, or person trained in vision assessment of preschool children, is adequate for most children. If the screening detects a problem, the child may need to see an ophthalmologist or other eye care professional. A comprehensive exam involves the use of eye drops to dilate the pupil, enabling a more thorough investigation of the overall health of the eye and visual system.

“As the kids head back to school, show them that you’ve done your homework,” said Dianna Seldomridge, MD, clinical spokesperson for the American Academy of Ophthalmology. “Educate yourself so they will have the best chance to preserve their vision for a lifetime.”

Here is the message from our lead consultant Professor Dr. Zia Ul Mazhry,

"Your child’s vision is critical and even more critical is protecting it during everyday activities. Eye injuries occur most commonly during outdoor sports or athletics. The parents and guardian need to pay close attention as a caregiver. If the kids are left alone, will often opt to not wear protective eyewear when playing sports, let alone a helmet, due to a number of reasons. Therefore, it’s up to you to ensure your child’s eyes and vision are kept safe."

August is Children's Eye Health & Safety Month

August is Children's Eye Health & Safety Month

Back to School! Good Vision and Overall Eye Health are Vital to Learning

Acuity Eye Center Lahore Pakistan Shares Back-to-School Tips for Children’s Eye Health and Safety Month

Back-to-school time is just around the corner, and the scramble to buy school clothes and new pencils, backpacks and notebooks will begin. Ophthalmologists remind busy parents not to neglect one of the most important learning tools: their children’s eyes.

Good vision and overall eye health are vital to learning. The Acuity Eye Center Lahore Pakistan joins the American Academy of Ophthalmology in emphasizing the importance of healthy vision to academic success during Children’s Eye Health and Safety Month in August.

Purpose of Children’s Eye Health and Safety Awareness Month

Parents should make their child’s vision health a priority, which is why the main objectives of Children’s Eye Health and Safety Awareness Month are to:

  • Spread Information On The Importance Of Healthy Vision – Many activities gear towards family-friendly resources that help parents take care of their child’s eye sight and keep it healthy.
  • Know More About Early Detection Of Vision Problems In Children – Impart the red flags that a child may have a vision problem, such as uneven focus, amblyopia (lazy eye) and strabismus (crossed eyes). Early detection of vision conditions is crucial. Lazy eye is often corrected if treatment started at an early age; however, successful treatment is rarely achieved if treatment has started after a child reaches 8 or 9 years old.
  • Raise Awareness About Preventing Eye Injuries In Children – In addition to eye diseases and conditions, you can also protect your children from sports-related eye injuries. About 100,000 sports-related eye injuries happen every day, where in one-third of these injuries occur in children under age 16. 90% could have been avoided if the child had worn protective eyewear, such as polycarbonate lenses fitted by an eye care professional. These lenses can withstand a ball traveling 90mph as it is 20 times stronger than ordinary eyeglasses.
  • Save Children’s Eyesight – Teach parents to help their child correct their vision and recover from vision loss.

Sports Safety

Sports Safety

Eye injuries are the leading cause of blindness in children in the United States and most of those injuries are sports-related. Protective eyewear is the key to sports eye safety as ninety percent of sports-related eye injuries can be avoided with the use of protective eyewear. Even if your child’s sports league does not require eyewear, you as a parent have a right to insist on protecting your child’s eyesight.

For healthy eyes and vision throughout the school year, Acuity Eye Center Lahore Pakistan and The American Academy of Ophthalmology recommend the following four tips:

1. Get regular childhood vision screenings

childhood vision screenings

Children’s eyes change rapidly, making regular vision screenings an important step in detecting and correcting eye problems early. In addition to screenings for infants, the Academy recommends further vision screening for children when they are:

· Pre-school age, between age 3 and 3 and a half

· Entering school

· Experiencing a possible vision problem

For school-age children, a vision screening, which is less comprehensive than a dilated eye examination by an ophthalmologist, can be performed by a pediatrician, family physician, nurse or trained technician during regular checkups. If the screening detects a problem, the child may need to see an ophthalmologist -- an eye physician and surgeon – or other eye care professional.

2. Know and share your family eye health history

Everyone should find out whether eye conditions or diseases run in their family. Parents should share that information with the person performing the screening when possible. Examples of common eye conditions include nearsightedness, crossed eye, known as strabismus, and lazy eye, known as amblyopia. If these are not treated in childhood, they can cause permanent vision loss in one eye.

3. Watch for signals of eye problems

Parents should be alert to symptoms that could indicate an eye or vision problem, such as complaints of eyestrain, headaches and squinting when reading or performing other common activities. Other symptoms to look for include a white or grayish-white coloring in the pupil, one eye that turns in or out, or eyes that do not track in sync together.

4. Wear protective eyewear when playing sports

100%

Eye injuries while playing sports can cause serious damage, whether by getting smacked with an elbow during basketball or hit with a hockey stick. If your child plays racket sports, hockey, field hockey, baseball or basketball, consider having them wear goggles or other certified protective eyewear.

Here is the message from our lead consultant Professor Dr. Zia Ul Mazhry,

"Your child’s vision is critical and even more critical is protecting it during everyday activities. Eye injuries occur most commonly during outdoor sports or athletic. The parents and guardian need to pay close attention as a caregiver. If the kids are left alone, will often opt to not wear protective eyewear when playing sports, let alone a helmet, due to a number of reasons. Therefore, it’s up to you to ensure your child’s eyes and vision is kept safe."

Eye Health Tips for High School and College Students

Students face special challenges to the eyes when they are under academic performance pressure. Lack of sleep, prolonged computer use and long hours studying make for tired eyes that are dry, scratchy and achy.

Prolonged computer use contributes to eye fatigue because you blink less frequently. Less blinking significantly reduces lubrication in the eye making it feel tired, scratchy and “dry” as a result. Also eyes are not designed for prolonged focus on a single object, such as the computer. Remedy: place a note on the computer screen as a reminder to blink and to look away from the screen and focus on objects in the distance. Looking out a window (20 – 20 – 20 rule: for every 20 minutes of computer work, look away for 20 seconds, and focus on a scene or object at least 20 feet away) is a good break for the eyes. The key is to give your eyes a rest.

Feb-2019 AMD Awareness month

AMD Awareness month

Most Americans Unaware of One of the Leading Causes of Blindness Among Seniors

ACUITY EYE CENTER LAHORE PAKISTAN and the American Academy of Ophthalmology reminds the public that a simple eye exam is key to saving sight against Age-Related Macular Degeneration

<LAHORE, PUNJAB> – 09-FEB-2019 — Age-Related Macular Degeneration is one of the leading causes of blindness among seniors, affecting approximately 2.1 million people nationwide. By 2050, it is expected that the number will more than double to 5.4 million. People may be putting themselves at unnecessary risk of vision loss by neglecting to have sight-saving eye exams. Throughout February, ACUITY EYE CENTER LAHORE PAKISTAN joins the American Academy of Ophthalmology in emphasising AMD awareness and encouraging those who are most at risk to ensure the health of their eyes by getting an eye exam from an ophthalmologist – a physician who specializes in the medical and surgical treatment of eye diseases and conditions.

Visual Field effect of AMD

AMD is a degenerative disease that damages the retina, which is the light-sensitive tissue at the back of the eye that focuses images and relays information to the brain. Over time, retinal damage can lead to permanent loss of central vision, limiting the ability to drive, read and recognize faces.

Age Related Macular Degeneration

There are two forms AMD – wet and dry. While the dry form of AMD leads to gradual vision loss, the wet form progresses at a faster rate and is responsible for 90 percent of all AMD-related blindness. Recent advancements in treatment options have significantly decreased the incidence of blindness. However, it is critical to get diagnosed and begin treatment as soon as possible to protect vision.

The leading cause of blindness in seniors is age-related macular degeneration. If you have a close relative with AMD, you have a 50 percent chance of developing the condition. Learn other risk factors and the steps you can take to protect yourself from AMD-related blindness:

http://bit.ly/GzOcdX

For information about AMD FAQs, please click https://goo.gl/Ymfhje

The Academy recommends the following steps to help potentially avoid AMD and other eye diseases:

· Get regular comprehensive medical eye exams. AMD often has no early warning signs, so getting regular comprehensive eye exams from an ophthalmologist is critical to diagnosing and treating the eye disease in its early stages. The Academy recommends that people over age 65 get an exam every one to two years, even if they have no symptoms of eye problems.

AMD vision effect

· Quit smoking. Numerous studies have shown smoking to increase the risk of developing AMD and the speed at which it progresses. If you smoke, you are twice as likely to develop macular degeneration compared with a nonsmoker.

· Know your family’s eye health history. If you have a close relative with AMD, you have a 50 percent greater chance of developing the condition. Before you go in for your next eye exam, speak with your family about their eye health history. Sharing this information with your ophthalmologist may prompt him or her to recommend more frequent eye exams. The earlier AMD is caught, the better chances you may have of saving your vision.

· Eat a diet rich in omega-3s and low in cholesterol and saturated fat. Several studies have shown that people who had a reduced risk of AMD had diets rich in omega-3 fatty acids, such as fish. In one study of patients who were at moderate risk for AMD progression, those who reported the highest omega-3 intake (not in the form of a supplement) were 30 percent less likely to develop advanced AMD after 12 years. In another study, an increased risk of AMD was found in individuals who had a higher intake of saturated fats and cholesterol and in those with a higher body mass index.

· Exercise regularly. Many studies have shown that getting regular exercise can benefit your eyes. One study found that exercising three times a week reduced the risk of developing wet AMD over 15 years by 70 percent.

“Most people understand the importance of annual medical examinations," said Rahul N. Khurana, M.D., a clinical spokesperson for the American Academy of Ophthalmology. “However, we often forget that our eyes also need regular evaluation by a medical doctor. Degenerative diseases, such AMD, can now be successfully treated, but early detection is imperative to avoid lasting consequences."

Eye Cancer

Eye Cancer: Overview

Eye cancer is a general term used to describe many types of tumors that can start in various parts of the eye. It occurs when healthy cells in or around the eye change and grow uncontrollably, forming a mass called a tumor. A tumor can be benign or cancerous. A benign tumor means the tumor can grow but will not spread. A cancerous tumor is malignant, meaning it can grow and spread to other parts of the body. Cancer that forms in the eyeball is called an intraocular (inside the eye) malignancy.

Sites of Eye Cancer

Parts of the eye

The eye is the organ that collects light and sends messages to the brain to form a picture. The three main parts of the eye are:

  • Eyeball
  • Orbit (eye socket)
  • Adnexal (accessory) structures, such as the eyelid and tear glands

The outer part of the eye is made up of the sclera, retina, and uvea. The sclera is the outer wall of the eyeball. The retina is a thin-layered structure that lines the eyeball and sends information from the eye to the brain. The uvea nourishes the eye. Both the retina and the uvea contain blood vessels.

The uvea consists of the following:

  • Iris: The colored part of the eye that controls the amount of light entering the eye
  • Ciliary body: Muscular tissue that produces the watery fluid in the eye and helps the eye focus
  • Choroid: The layer of tissue underneath the retina that contains connective tissue and melanocytes, which are pigmented (colored) cells, and nourishes the inside of the eye. The choroid is the most common site for a tumor.

Types of intra ocular cancer

The most common intra ocular cancer in adults is uveal metastases, which is cancer that has spread to the uvea from another place in the body. This is called secondary cancer. This guide is about primary intra ocular cancer, meaning that the tumor started in the eye, not somewhere else in the body.

Melanoma is the most common type of primary intra ocular cancer in adults. It begins when cells called melanocytes grow uncontrollably. Intra ocular melanoma is also called uveal melanoma.

Other, less common types of an intra ocular tumor include:

  • Intra ocular lymphoma is lymphoma that begins in the eyeball. This condition is rare and can be difficult for doctors to diagnose. Many doctors consider intra ocular lymphoma to be a type of central nervous system lymphoma. Most intra ocular lymphomas are non-Hodgkin lymphoma.
  • Retinoblastoma is a rare form of childhood eye cancer.
  • Hemangioma is a benign tumor of the choroid and retina that starts in the blood vessels.

Other, rare cancers of the eye include:

  • Conjunctival melanoma is a tumor of the conjunctiva, which is a membrane that lines the eyelid and eyeball. If it is not treated, it can spread to the lymph nodes, which are tiny, bean-shaped organs located throughout the body that fight disease. A conjunctival melanoma tends to recur (come back after treatment) on the eye’s surface and looks like dark spots on the eye. Doctors often perform a biopsy on a spot that appears to be conjunctival melanoma. A biopsy is the removal of a sample of the tissue for examination under a microscope.
  • Eyelid carcinoma (basal or squamous cell) is a variation of skin cancer. This tumor may be surgically removed and is usually not dangerous if it is treated early.
  • Lacrimal gland tumor is a benign or malignant tumor of the glands that produce tears.

Facts About Retinoblastoma

Retinoblastoma

Understanding Vision Problems - Symptoms

Blurring of Vision

Nearsightedness : Blurry vision that gets worse when you look at distant objects. Your doctor will call it myopia. You may have very good close vision.

Farsightedness : Blurry vision when you look at close up objects. Near and far objects may both look fuzzy. The doctor will say you have hyperopia.

Astigmatism : You might have blurry or double vision at any distance. You may also be nearsighted or farsighted.

Detached retina : You’ll notice a sudden onset of flashing lights often paired with black floaters in your vision. It won’t hurt, but at first you might see a dark curtain or veil covering a portion of your vision. Cover one eye and then the other and compare the sight in each one.

Color blindness : You have trouble with shades or intensity of colors. Because it’s all about perception, you may not know there’s a problem until the doctor finds it. This genetic condition mainly affects men.

Preventive Eye Care and Eye Examinations Are Important

Just as with annual physical examinations, it's equally important to have regular eye examinations. An annual eye examination is appropriate for most people.

If you have glaucoma, macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy, or a family history of eye diseases or disorders, regular monitoring and more frequent visits may be required.

It's important to discuss your health care situation with your primary care doctor and your eye doctor and make sure you follow his or her advice about ongoing appointments, medications, and/or treatments. Prevention is an important component of eye care.

Some eye conditions and diseases are hereditary and family members may need to be monitored regularly by a general physician and an ophthalmologist or optometrist.

AEC gives due Importance to Modern Medical Devices in your Eyecare

AEC gives due Importance to Modern Medical Devices in your Eye care

At Acuity Eye Centre we provide a great range of modern technologies to best examine your eyes for eye disease, binocular vision problems, and refractive problems (for glasses and/or contact lenses).

The equipment used by our front staff in our pre-testing room is computerised and does the following:

  1. The autorefractor measures the curvature of your corneas (important in fitting contact lenses and sometimes in diagnosing corneal disease).
  2. The autorefractor also estimates your refractive error (an objective estimation of what your eyeglass prescription may be). Your doctor of optometry requires another refractive testing (both objective and subjective) before a final prescription can be written.
  3. Nidek Digital Lensometer measures the refractive power of the glasses you are already using

The Phoroptor

EyeAcuity Phoroptor

In the doctor’s examination room, he utilises a variety of specialised equipment. The phoroptor is an instrument that greatly aids in the determination of your spectacle prescription. The microscope (slit-lamp biomicroscope) is used to assess how healthy your eyes are (both inside and out). There are also handheld and headset instruments which allow for a thorough evaluation of back of the eyes (retina). Dilation with eye drops is often required.

Visual Field Testing

EyeAcuity Humphrey Visual field

Visual field testing is an automated, computerised instrument that tests the sensitivity of various points in your peripheral vision. This is useful when looking for glaucoma, pituitary tumours, visual field loss from strokes and many other situations.

OCT

EyeAcuity OCT Machine

OCT is a tool to aid in the diagnosis and management of retinal disease (such as age-related macular degeneration, cystoid macular oedema, macular holes) and glaucoma.  It uses light to scan the retina and optic disc to give a cross-sectional (that is to say three dimensional) image of those regions.”  It allows more accurate and faster diagnosis of these conditions which ultimately means better care for the patient.

It is not used for peripheral retinal problems such as retinal detachments.

Additionally, there are other tests/procedures the doctor may recommend after the eye exam. These include visual field testing, Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT) and pachymetery.

Digital Slit Lamp Photography

Digital Slit Lamp Photography

Slit lamp photography to practice can offer several advantages. The fine detail can allow detection of slight changes of corneal findings, such as resolving corneal infections or edema. These recordings can also enhance patient care when a patient is being followed by multiple physicians for the same condition. By projecting the images to a larger screen, these photos can also serve as excellent teaching tools for patients to explain everything from meibomian gland disease to cataracts.

Children Eye Examination and Refraction with Handheld Devices

Significance of Eye Testing in Children.

Eye exams for children are very important to insure your child's eyes are healthy and have no vision problems that could interfere with school performance and potentially affect your child's safety.

When should a child's eye be examined?

AOA recommends an eye exam every two years if no vision correction is required. Children who need eyeglasses or contact lenses should be examined annually or as recommended by their optometrist or ophthalmologist. AOP recommends that parents should book their children in for a sight test around the age of three, so that conditions are picked up and treated early. After the first test, the NHS recommends that children have regular eye tests at least once every two years.

Eye Testing For Infants

Babies should be able to see as well as adults in terms of focusing ability, color vision and depth perception by 6 months of age.

To assess whether your baby's eyes are developing normally, the doctor typically will use the following tests:

  • Tests of pupil responses evaluate whether the eye's pupil opens and closes properly in the presence or absence of light.
  • "Fixate and follow" testing determines whether your baby's eyes are able to fixate on and follow an object such as a light as it moves.

Infants should be able to fixate on an object soon after birth and follow an object by the time they are 3 months old.
  • Preferential looking involves using cards that are blank on one side with stripes on the other side to attract the gaze of an infant to the stripes. In this way, vision capabilities can be assessed without the use of a typical eye chart.
